Vikings vs. Redskins odds, line: Thursday Night Football picks, predictions from advanced model on 86-60 run

The Redskins hope a familiar setting will spur quarterback Case Keenum to return to his early-season form and help Washington pull the upset when it visits the Minnesota Vikings for Thursday Night Football. Keenum did his best work at U.S. Bank Stadium in 2017 when he went 11-3 as a starter and led the Vikings to the NFC Championship Game. He threw for more than 200 yards and had two touchdown passes in his first two games this season, but has tailed off in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Kirk Cousins has been shredding defenses the past three weeks, all Vikings victories. Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. ET at U.S. Bank Stadium. Minnesota is a 16-point favorite in the latest Vikings vs. Redskins odds, while the over-under for total points scored is 42, up 1.5 from the opener. Before you make any Redskins vs. Vikings picks, you need to read the NFL predictions from the SportsLine Projection Model.

The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up almost $7,000 for $100 players on its top-rated NFL picks since its inception four years ago. It has nailed its recent top-rated NFL picks, entering Week 8 of the 2019 NFL schedule on a strong 24-17 run that dates back to last season. It's also on an incredible 86-60 roll on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season. And in Week 7, it nailed the Chiefs (-3) covering with plenty of room to spare against the Broncos and the Ravens (+3) staying within the spread against the Seahawks in a game Baltimore won outright by 14.

The model also ranked in the Top 10 on NFLPickWatch for the third year in a row on straight-up NFL picks and beat more than 96 percent of CBS Sports office pool players. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now, it has set its sights on Redskins vs. Vikings. We can tell you it's leaning over, but it also says one side of the spread cashes in nearly 60 percent of simulations. You can only see that pick at SportsLine.

The model knows Cousins has been an integral part of the Vikings' three-game winning streak. He threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-30 victory against the Lions on Sunday and has thrown for 976 yards and 10 TDs during the streak. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs had seven catches for 142 yards, while running back Dalvin Cook rushed 142 yards and two touchdowns for the Vikings, who average 391 yards and 27.4 points per game.

The Redskins are 0-5 against the spread in their last five games following a straight-up loss and they dropped an ugly 9-0 game to San Francisco last Sunday. They will have to contend with a defense that allows only 17.6 points per game. Linebacker Eric Kendricks is its anchor, leading the team with 61 tackles, and defensive ends Danielle Hunter (seven sacks) and Everson Griffen (four) provide the pressure.

But just because Minnesota is on a roll doesn't mean it will cover the Vikings vs. Redskins spread on Thursday Night Football.

Keenum has passed for 1,213 yards and nine touchdowns, completing 66.3 percent of his passes this season. He doesn't have much help since injuries have decimated the offense. Veteran Adrian Peterson has become the featured back, and reports say he's expected to play despite suffering an ankle injury in a 9-0 loss to San Francisco on Sunday. The 34-year-old has run for a total of 199 yards on 43 carries the past two games.

Rookie receiver Terry McLaurin, a third-round pick, has been a bright spot on offense, with 24 receptions for 419 yards and five touchdowns. Paul Richardson, with 20 catches for 163 yards and three TDs and Trey Quinn (22-165-1) are the other top receivers. Veteran tight end Vernon Davis (10-123-1) could return from a concussion this week.

NFL Week 7 Picks: Schedule, Odds And Expert Predictions Against The Spread

Week 7 of the 2019 NFL season will be here before you know it, starting off with a great rivalry game on Thursday Night Football between the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos. These AFC West foes will set the pace for an action-packed Sunday, which has 12 contests taking place throughout the day. It begins with a flurry of eight kickoffs in the early afternoon, a timeslot highlighted by the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions battling for a key win in the NFC North. This leads into a trio of late afternoon matchups, including a pair of must-see showdowns in the Baltimore Ravens vs. Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints vs. Chicago Bears. Week 7 will wrap up with a pair of divisional rivalries playing out in primetime, as the Dallas Cowboys host the Philadelphia Eagles in a critical NFC East affair on Sunday Night Football before the New England Patriots take on the New York Jets in an all-AFC East Monday Night Football clash to close out the schedule.

If you can believe it or not, the midpoint of the campaign is nearly upon us. Each team has now played five or six games, giving viewers a clear picture of what to expect on a weekly basis. These last six weeks have also provided enough data to start gleaning real insights from at a macro level. With that in mind, perhaps the most notable betting trend of the 2019 NFL season has been the overwhelming success of underdogs. Teams getting points have been paying dividends for backers, going 53-36-2 against the spread overall and 41-20-1 on the road. The ‘dogs were certainly barking last week, covering in 10 of the 14 contests on the schedule, and could be in line to make plenty more noise in Week 7. The week opens with Chiefs laying three to the Broncos on Thursday Night Football, a program that has seen massive underdog success recently. The favorite has covered just once in the last seven Thursday evening contests, an undeniable trend that may continue if Denver successfully defends its home field against a reeling Kansas City squad.

If you are looking for some help in identifying underdogs poised to defy expectations this weekend, you’ve come to the right place. Pro handicapper Jon Price of SportsInformationTraders.com has sent along his top picks for the week, a list that includes a trio of favorites failing to cover the spread. New England Patriots vs. New York Giants preview: Predictions, point spread, game plans, matchups and more

The New England Patriots have a quick turnaround this week, taking on the New York Giants on just a four-day layoff.

The Patriots have rolled to a 5-0 start with a pretty weak schedule. This week, they face a Giants team that’s rebuilding, but also playing with a spark behind rookie quarterback Daniel Jones.

Here’s a look at the weather, key matchups and the betting line for Thursday’s game.

ODDS AND POINT SPREADS

Bovada: Patriots -17.5

Vegas Insider: Patriots -17

Westgate: Patriots -17

Over/under: 41.5

PATRIOTS OFFENSE VS. GIANTS DEFENSE

- Can the running game keep it going?

Sony Michel and the Patriots offensive line have had a slow start to the 2019 season. So far, when the offense has been working, it’s been when the team has gone full Air Brady.

But Sunday’s win over the Redskins was a welcome sign of life for the flagging running attack. After leaning on Washington for most of the game, New England barreled down with Michel running behind undrafted rookie Jakob Johnson to great effect.

If they can keep that up against the Giants, that fares well for the offense as a whole, especially as the receiving corps deals with injuries.

-So, this is the solution at tight end?

The Patriots appeared to be using Matt LaCosse and Ryan Izzo as a stopgap solution before Ben Watson came back from suspension. Then the team up and released Watson.

Through four games, the duo has caught four passes combined, with most of Izzo’s catches coming when opposing teams have left him wide open.

With Julian Edelman dinged up and Phillip Dorsett dealing with a hamstring injury, the Patriots need to start targeting some other players on offense. Getting any consistent signs of life from the Izzo/LaCosse combo will be key in that.

PATRIOTS DEFENSE VS. GIANTS OFFENSE

- How good is Daniel Jones?

Bill Belichick is 12-0 against rookie quarterbacks at home with the Patriots. Typically, rookies have been eaten alive when going up against his defenses at Gillette Stadium. What’s more, this particular defense is his best in years.

Jones has displayed exceptional arm talent and a penchant for making plays. But on Sunday, the Patriots will serve a monumental test for his ability to read defenses. If New England’s secondary can confound him, then that will really take the air out of New York’s attack.

- Who’s going to play for New York?

Sure, the Giants have wide receiver Golden Tate back from suspension. But other than that, things are looking pretty rough for New York’s backs and receivers.

Star running back Saquon Barkley isn’t going to play, neither are wide receiver Sterling Shephard and tight end Evan Engram. Those three players just so happen to be the three most dangerous players on the Giants offense.

The Patriots defense is crazy deep. The Giants offense? It’s looking pretty shallow.

SPECIAL TEAMS

New York

K: Aldrick Rosas (4-of-5, 11-of-11 on extra points)

P: Riley Dixon (47.6 Y/P)

KR/PR: Corey Balentine (26.3 Y/KR), Golden Tate (17.0 Y/PR)

DVOA rank: 10th

New England

K: Mike Nugent (2-of-2, 3-of-4 on extra points)

P: Jake Bailey (46.4 Y/P)

KR/PR: Brandon Bolden (19.5 Y/KR), Gunner Olszewski (8.6 Y/PR)

DVOA rank: 16th

Breakdown: The Patriots took a big jump in special teams rankings, going from 27th to 16th in the NFL by DVOA. It certainly helped that they got some solid punt returns. It didn’t help that Mike Nugent missed an extra point. However, they could be turning the corner in that department now that he got the jitters of the first kick out of the way.

In the meantime, the Giants got a boost from Tate’s return from suspension, giving them a solid option as a punt returner.

TOP 3 MATCHUPS TO WATCH

1. Stephon Gilmore vs. Golden Tate

With Barkley (and likely Shephard) out Thursday, the Giants will likely be hurting for receivers. That’s not a great development against a team with one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks in Stephon Gilmore.

Jones may wind up looking Tate’s way early and often, given that his other options are guys like Darius Slayton, Cody Latimer and Benny Fowler.

If Gilmore can lock down Tate, Jones may not have many options when he drops back.

2. Patriots pass rushers vs. Nate Solder

Sunday’s game features the return of old friend Nate Solder, who’s in his second season as the Giants’ franchise left tackle. In that time, he’s faced some pretty heavy criticism for uneven play.

Against the Patriots, he’ll likely have to face off against a variety of pass rushers coming from different positions, whether that’s Michael Bennett or old teammates like Jamie Collins, Dont’a Hightower or Deatrich Wise.

If Solder struggles, it could be a long day for Jones back there.

3. Janoris Jenkins vs. Julian Edelman/Josh Gordon

With Phillip Dorsett hurt and the tight ends a non-factor, Tom Brady will likely be relying pretty heavily on his top two receivers. That means the Giants’ top cornerback, Jenkins, will have Brady looking his way early and often.

Jenkins, a high-priced free agent, hasn’t had a great season. If Gordon or Edelman can get open against him, that could provide a catalyst for the rest of the offense.
