Eagles vs. Packers preview: Live stream, how to watch on TV, 5 things to know

FIVE THINGS TO WATCH

1. FOOL ME NOT: Both head coaches stressed this week that they won’t be putting in a bunch of new offensive wrinkles, given there are just three days of preparation for this game. “I think it’s more or less your best hits,” coach Matt LaFleur said. “Just stuff that you know and you’re confident they’re going to be able to go out and execute and not think too much.” The troublesome part for the Packers is that they don’t have an identity on offense. What do they hang their hat on? The Eagles, on the other hand, have an excellent offensive line and can protect quarterback Carson Wentz. Their identity is controlling the ball, attacking weak spots and avoiding turnovers.

2. CATCH AS CATCH CAN: The Eagles would be 2-1 coming into this game if they hadn’t dropped seven passes and turned the ball over twice on fumbles Sunday against Detroit and 3-0 if receiver Nelson Agholor had caught potential touchdown passes the past two weeks. According to STATS, the Eagles lead the NFL with eight drops and the Packers have two. The return of veteran Alshon Jeffery (calf) helps the Eagles a lot, and if backup tight end Dallas Goedert (calf) can play quality snaps, they’re in even better shape. But if they don’t catch the ball, they can’t win. “This game has always come down to players and players making plays,” coach Doug Pederson said. “That’s kind of been the case in our couple of losses here. We just have to coach better, we have to focus better, detail our work better, and then when the players get opportunities to make plays, they have to make them.”

3. FLETCHER WHO? The best player on Philadelphia’s defense — and maybe their whole team — is defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. In the past, he has been almost impossible to stop with one guy and difficult to stop with two. But Cox has only three tackles, no sacks and one pass breakup. Cox had offseason foot surgery and was battling a toe injury and may not be 100%. The Packers must control him if they want to run the ball and stop his penetration when they pass it. “They’ve got some really good players that penetrate up the field and they cause havoc,” offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett said. “That’s what this system has done. They’re very sound. I think it’s one of those things is we have to understand that there’s not going to be a lot of huge plays all the time and we have to take what they give us.”

4. D IS FOR DEVELOPING: As good as the Packers’ defense has looked, it did give up 198 yards rushing against Minnesota and 149 yards rushing against Denver. Opponents are averaging 5.34 yards per carry in those two games. Tack on three passing plays of 40 or more yards and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine remains unsatisfied. “The praise we’re receiving as a defense, our guys know that we’re nowhere near where we can be,” he said. “The film doesn’t lie. We’ve had some plays where we would want them back and there have been some things we should have done that we didn’t. But hopefully they realize how close we are to being real good. But we’re not there yet until we get a handle on limiting the explosives.”

5. KEEPING THE BALL: The Eagles lead the league with 212 plays from scrimmage. The Packers rank 24th with 178. If the Packers are going to move up the charts in scoring offense (they’re 23rd), they’ve got to be greedy with the ball. They’re scoring enough points to win, which should please them, but they’re putting undue pressure on their defense (198 plays) to hold leads. “It starts with plays,” Hackett said. “You’ve got to have plays, you’ve got to convert on third down. Right now, the third down is disappointing. (The) more plays, (the) more ops (opportunities), and everybody’s happy. Especially us.”

Eagles vs. Packers Week 4 game preview and predictions

There is every reason to believe the Philadelphia Eagles will not defeat the Green Bay Packers this evening on Thursday Night Football.

Just look at all the things working against the Eagles’ favor:

The Packers have the NFL’s second best overall win percentage in home games since Aaron Rodgers became the starting quarterback in 2008.
Rodgers is among the best quarterbacks in the league. It’s hard to imagine the Eagles’ defense shutting hm down when they’re struggling to both rush the passer and cover effectively. Rodgers made his job look so easy while last going up against Jim Schwartz’s unit back in 2016.
The Packers’ defense ranks third overall in DVOA. Green Bay’s combination of defensive talent and coaching is very formidable. The Packers have the NFL’s second best graded pass rush by Pro Football Focus; they’ve logged 13 sacks in three games. It’s going to be difficult for the Eagles to score points with DeSean Jackson still out and Alshon Jeffery/Dallas Goedert seemingly playing at less than 100%.
It’s really not difficult to envision the Eagles getting blown out in this game.

And yet ... I’m 100% irrationally confident the Eagles are going to win this game.

They need this game way more than the Packers do and we’ve seen Doug Pederson’s teams fight hard when their backs have been against the wall before. Carson Wentz is also bound to stop being so unlucky at some point, right?

It won’t make sense but the Eagles will win this game. It’s a lock.

My predictions:

Score prediction: 24-21, Eagles win. In overtime.

Bold prediction: Eagles defensive ends, who have combined for zero sacks this season, will have three tonight. Including one strip-sack.

Tennessee Titans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars: 5 Bold predictions for Week 3

Heading into their matchup on Thursday Night Football, the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars are on a short week coming off of losses, both in AFC South matchups. The Titans were unable to overcome some questionable play-calling against Indianapolis while the Jaguars fell to 0-2 after a bold two-point conversion attempt came up short against Houston.

The Jaguars, of course, have been in the news throughout the build-up to Week 3 thanks to star cornerback Jalen Ramsey. The former first-round pick has requested a trade. As such, this matchup against the Titans may well be his final game in a Jacksonville uniform.

Even still, the Titans and Jaguars could both use this win, though it may be hard to come by. Derrick Henry, Marcus Mariota and Tennessee need to find stability and consistency. Meanwhile, the Jags need backup Gardner Minshew to step up to the cause once again, but also need Leonard Fournette and their vaunted defense to rise to the occasion with Nick Foles out as well.

Taking all of this into account, let’s get bold as we make five predictions for the Tennessee Titans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday Night Football in Week 3.

5. Ramsey (likely) leaves Jacksonville with a big game.

As mentioned, this could be the final game for Jalen Ramsey as a member of the Jaguars. Though Jacksonville is demanding a high price for the cornerback in any potential trade, the demand for such a terrific player should not be in short supply throughout the rest of the league. Thus, it figures that he could be dealt away before Week 4.

Throughout the week leading up to this home matchup against the Titans, though, Ramsey has talked about still playing hard until he’s no longer in Jacksonville. Ramsey may be outspoken, loud and a bit of a diva but he’s not a liar when it comes to playing hard. Subsequently, expect him to put his best foot forward on Thursday night, especially against the team he rooted for as a Nashville native.

With the shaky offense and performance of Mariota and Tennessee, Ramsey is going to go out on top. He’ll notch at least one interception against the Titans and will have a handful of pass breakups to go along with it. He may be leaving but he’ll leave on a high note with the Jaguars.
